This year sister Luna is pulling all of the stops and giving all of the smoke. This is quite a special moon as it's not just a super moon but it also happens to land on same day as the Spring Equinox. Starting at 9:43 EST, just 4 hours after the equinox begins here in the northern hemisphere. Let's explore more of the significance and how to bring in the new season!
SUPER MOON ON THE SPRING EQUINOX
The March full Moon is particularly special because it reaches its peak on the same day as the spring equinox , on March 20, 2019. The last time the full Moon and the spring equinox coincided ton the same date was on March 20, 1981! This full Moon is also a supermoon, meaning the Moon will be nearly at its closest to Earth, and may “appear” brighter and bigger than normal, provided the night sky is clear and dark for the month of March. It’s the year’s third of three back to back full supermoons.
THE FULL MOON AND EASTER
Did you know: Easter Sunday (in the Western Christian Church) is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full Moon that occurs on or just after the spring equinox.
Since the full Moon AND the vernal equinox both fall on March 20 this year (in North America, at least), you might expect that Easter Sunday would be on the following Sunday, March 24.
However, for simplicity’s sake, the Church set a fixed date for the equinox, March 21.Additionally, the Church does not rely on the date of the astronomical full Moon, but rather the ecclesiastical full Moon, which occurs on the 14th day of the ecclesiastical lunar month. The date of the ecclesiastical full Moon may fall one to two days before the astronomical full Moon. Therefore, because the first full Moon after March 21 doesn’t occur until April 19 this year, Easter Sunday 2019 falls on Sunday, April 21!
(This is not the first time the church’s “set” equinox and astronomy’s “moving” equinox affected Easter’s date; it last happened in 1981 and will happen again in 2038.)
What is a worm moon?
Traditionally, the Moon we see in March is called the Full Worm Moon. At this time of the year, the ground begins to soften enough for earthworm casts to reappear, inviting birds to feed; a true sign of spring. Roots start to push their way up through the soil, and the Earth experiences a re-birth as it awakens from its winter slumber. There are many alternative names for the March Moon. One name was the Full Sap Moon, as this is the time of year when the sap of sugar maples starts to flow
How to Celebrate
1. Create an Altar
Making an altar space is one of the sweetest ways to call in Spirit (whatever that means to you; the Divine Force, the Universe, your Ancestors, Magic). I love to think of the elements as I create my altar. I lay down a beautiful fabric. Then, I gather the four elements; Fire- candles, Earth- crystal flowers & plants(potent for the Spring Equinox, symbolizing new growth and new blooms), Water - a bowl of water to my altar, sweetened by flower petals or essential oils, and Air- I love to burn incense. The act of creating an altar is itself sacred. It slows you down. It brings you into the present moment. Do this with just you or as a collective.
2. Plant Seeds
The biggest thing that I love about the spring equinox is that it's time to plant those seeds that that we've been collecting through the winter. I always start out with my herbal and mixed flowers so that my bees have something to look forward to once the weather really starts to break, as well as they'll be ready to use sooner for products. My nieces and nephews have a dream garden where they get to pick out there favorite seeds and will plant one seed for each dream or wish that they want to come true for the year.( they really set that bar high)
3. Ultimate Spring Clean
We all know how to change our bedding, empty our closets, put away our winter clothes, and toss out all the expired food in the back of the fridge and cupboards, but awakening the energy of your home’s spirit is a great way to welcome the changing seasons. Open all the windows, doors, and cupboards in your house, and burn some dried herbs, flowers or wood in a fire safe dish, and waft the cleansing smoke around your entire home, sure to get in every nook and cranny to cleanse your space energetically.
4. Charge Your Crystals
This seems to be a given, but with such a special occurrence that won't happen for almost another 20 years, you better catch all the juice and smoke that Sister Luna is handing out. Let's just call it a super charge, like having a Samsung.
5. Set Your Intentions or Plans
Here is where I start to really making major plans for the fair and dreaming of a huge harvest and plentiful livestock. With the Spring Equinox coinciding with the Full Moon, radical shifts start in the ether. We begin a new season, filled with endless possibilities, projects, and passions. The sky is the limit! The future seems bright and promising. As long as we correct the past and the present under the Super moon, we can inspire ourselves to achieve greatness. We can attain our desires. Set your dreams and intentions to a whole new level.
We in the season of re-birth, it's time to sow your seeds and water yourself. Grow and blossom into greatness. As always. Epis Love & Nameste
